BYD has officially launched its highly anticipated Han L sedan and Tang L SUV, both featuring groundbreaking “Megawatt” charging technology capable of adding approximately 250 miles (400 km) of range in just five minutes. Adding to the excitement, the starting prices for these technologically advanced EVs are even lower than previously estimated, beginning at the equivalent of around $30,000 USD.

Megawatt Charging at a Surprisingly Accessible Price Point

BYD’s new charging platform, debuting in the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV, operates on a 1,000-volt high-voltage electrical architecture, enabling ultra-fast charging speeds. While current charging infrastructure may not yet fully support megawatt charging with a single cable, both vehicles are equipped with dual charging ports, allowing for simultaneous fast-charging to achieve these rapid charging times. BYD claims the Han L EV can gain 400 kilometers of range in just five minutes and charge from 10% to 70% in a mere six minutes. A full 0-100% charge is said to take only 20 minutes.

The initial pre-sale price estimations were already competitive, but the officially announced starting prices are even more appealing. This positions BYD’s ultra-fast charging EVs as surprisingly accessible to a broader range of consumers, significantly undercutting the price of comparable EVs from other manufacturers.

Han L Sedan and Tang L SUV: Performance and Range

Both the Han L and Tang L are available in pure electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (DM) variants. The EV versions are equipped with BYD’s new Blade Batteries, boasting a capacity of 83.2 kWh. The Han L EV offers a CLTC range of either 701 km (436 miles) or 601 km (373 miles) depending on the configuration. However, real-world range may fall short since the CLTC cycle is more optimistic than EPA or WLTP standards.

The DM (plug-in hybrid) versions of both models also offer impressive performance and efficiency, featuring BYD’s 5th-generation DM-p technology.

Implications for the EV Market

BYD’s launch of these ultra-fast charging EVs at unexpectedly competitive prices could significantly disrupt the electric vehicle market. The ability to add substantial range in just five minutes addresses a key concern for potential EV buyers – charging time. Combined with the attractive price points, the Han L and Tang L pose a serious challenge to established EV manufacturers.

The Han L and Tang L are expected to be available in Europe and, hopefully, in the U.S. soon as well. Be sure to follow EV.com so you don’t miss major announcements like this. If you’re ready to go electric, check out our Search section for the best deals available in the U.S.
